Biography

Carolyn Cowan is an embodied psychotherapist, yoga and breathwork teacher and teacher trainer who has spent over 20 years working with the pre-and-postnatal period, helping others with issues including birth trauma, tokophobia and post-natal depression. Carolyn had six pregnancies, has two children and runs a private psychotherapy practice in London.  She has post graduate certificates in Psychosexual and Relationship Therapy, Trauma Therapy, Advanced Couples Work and more.

She is 30 Years clean and sober from drugs and alcohol. Throughout her own journey out of addiction, over the last 30+ years, she has worked endlessly for others. The pregnant person has always been an area of specialism within that, both as a yoga teacher and trainer (where she was named, in 2019, as one of the top 16 in London) and in her work as a therapist. She is also an Advanced Yoga Instructor with over 10,000 hours of experience. She  runs a 220 hour Kundalini Global Teacher Training and many further trainings that are for both yoga teachers and individuals.

The author of a highly regarded yoga training manual, her first book for the general market - BREATHING FOR PREGNANCY - was published in November 2023 by Rider (PRH).

Books

BREATHING FOR PREGNANCY

A radically calming book to ease symptoms of worry and anxiety during pregnancy and labour; manage the stress response and hormones using breath; stretch and move through yoga poses during pregnancy and after birth, and create your own breath work practice for after birth and beyond. This is a startling book that has the potential to change everyone’s experience of pregnancy and to effect a dramatic improvement on inter-personal and family relationships.

In a society where experts dominate pregnancy, childbirth and the neonatal period, often diminishing any autonomy the parents may have, Breathing for Pregnancy shines like a beacon. Carolyn Cowan offers a pathway to taking control of stress and changing behaviour using a simple resource that we all have, breath. The writing style is engaging, respectful and written as a supportive friend and champion. I thoroughly recommend this book to those going through pregnancy and those who work with them.
