Books
Her first book, THE SUPER-HELPER SYNDROME: A Survival Guide for Compassionate People , co-authored with Rod Vincent, was published in 2022. It was shortlisted for best in Wellbeing and Wellness at the Business Book Awards 2023 and received highly-commended.
“This book is an essential read for anyone working in health or social care. It can help reveal why people respond in the way they do to the situations of others, the personal cost of doing so and how they can help without paying a high emotional price.” - Professor Alison Leary, Chair of Healthcare & Workforce Modelling LSBU.
"The Super-Helper Syndrome is a highly original book for people who spend their lives helping others, often at the detriment of looking after themselves. The judges felt that this book was very timely post-pandemic, with many NHS workers and individuals who care for relatives feeling burnt out and exhausted. As Jess & Rod point out though, anybody could be a ‘Super-Helper’, with the book drawing from a wide range of brave personal stories and interviews. The Super-Helper Syndrome shines a light for many people who don’t realise they are a ‘Super-Helper’ and gives them the tools to put their own wellbeing first." - Business Book Awards judge.
The paperback of THE SUPER-HELPER SYNDROME was published in March 2024.
'It goes well beyond reminding us of the importance of self-care and digs deep into unconscious beliefs and thinking patterns. I'm very sure that everyone could relate to the Super-Helper Syndrome.’ - Carers UK
I wish this book had been available for me to read years ago. Besides explaining why super-helpers behave as they do, it's given me a healthier mindset and allowed me to reassess what boundaries around selflessness can look like. ‘ - Martine Croxall, BBC Television Journalist
