Biography
Clare is a writer and editor with a particular interest in folklore, plants, magic and transformative travel. A career as a magazine editor and journalist has allowed her to indulge these passions and she has written about her travels for Coast magazine (which she edited for six years), The Guardian, The Sunday Times, Wanderlust and Which? Travel, among others. Her writing on various lifestyle topics has also appeared in many other publications including The Simple Things, Homes & Antiques, Tatler, and Country Living.
After years living in London editing consumer magazines, she decamped to rural Herefordshire to write books, run a smallholding and create a magical garden. That’s all going to plan, although keeping sheep has proved trickier than she had imagined. Chickens are easier. Moving to this county of many leylines, misty valleys, apple orchards and long- held customs, has also recharged her interest in folklore, magic and the natural world. She is a practising druid, dowser and general enthusiastic for ancient sites, trees, plants and the Old Ways.
Books
Clare’s first book was THE NATIONAL TRUST BOOK OF THE COAST, and she has since written several coastal guidebooks for them as well as SIMPLE PLEASURES: LIFE’S LITTLE JOYS, the perfect antidote to a disconnected modern world. She also wrote HIDDEN VILLAGES OF BRITAIN, the official tie-in to the popular Channel 4 programme ‘Penelope Keith’s Hidden Villages’.
Her other titles include an inspiring book on modern pilgrimages BEYOND THE FOOTPATH: MINDFUL ADVENTURES FOR MODERN PILGRIMS (Piatkus, 2019) and SACRED PLACES: WHERE TO FIND WONDER IN THE WORLD, a book about transformative travel (Aster, 2020).
THE WITCH’S YEARBOOK and accompanying card deck was published by David & Charles in 2021, for whom she also wrote THE MAGIC OF SEEDS (2023), a book about growing herbs and flowers informed by folklore and herbal wisdom. Her most recent book, based on her own garden in Herefordshire, is YOUR MAGICAL GARDEN (Cico) 2023).
Her next title will be released in Spring 2025, with additional decks in 2024.
